EA makes use of Tolkien's other works, giving players with nearly all of the author's mythos. In this game, the Good and Evil sides have been divided into races: you can now control Elves, Dwarves and Men of West (on the Good side) and Isengard, Mordor and the Goblins (on the Evil side) independently. Still of vital importance are the heroes. The game also allows you to make your own custom hero units - including role, appearance and powers. New to Battle for Middle Earth II are naval units and naval combat.
