This gig at the Olympia was the 2nd Parisian gig of the 2006
"On An Island" European Tour (David played the evening before
at the Grand Rex Theatre, not far from the Olympia).
The concert at the Olympia had some particularities that made
that show very unique.
Firstly, David invited Sam Brown to sing The Great Gig In The Sky,
as she was in town that night to perform with Jools Holland and his
Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, at the Trabendo. She performed during
the 1st set, just after "The Blue", and probably left the Olympia
just after the song, to fulfill her obligations with the Jools
Holland band...
Just after this nice surprise, some French people in the audience
began to wish a happy birthday to David, who turned 60 just 10 days
earlier, on March 6th. Then most of the audience sang the famous
"Happy Birthday" song to David.
A third particularity of the Olympia gig is due to a big larsen
problem during "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", at the beginning of
the first verse. David stopped, and after the problem was identified
(refer to the title of the RoIO ;-)), David restarted the song from
the beginning! Furthermore - probably to avoid to play twice the
same solos during the same concert - he did totally improvised lines
during the intro, and also during the first electric solo just after
Syd's Theme! This performance of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" at the
Olympia is therefore a very unique version, with alternate solos,
almost totally improvised and very exciting to hear!
The Olympia concert was also the first one where David played "Fat
Old Sun" instead of "Dominoes" (and he was totally on fire during
the final electric solo!).
The recording from Xave was excellent, and needed just slight
adjustments on the levels (on the raw recording, the level of
the audience parts was far too loud compared to the rest of the
recording). After comparing with the other sources we were able
to hear from that night, we believe this could be the best
recording of the Olympia concert.

Notes (from many sources):
This two CD set features a complete show from the 1977 Animals tour (aka ‘In The Flesh’ tour).
It’s notable for it’s very good performance and the rare encore of ‘Careful With That Axe, Eugene’.
A song that hadn’t been played for a few years at that time and has never ever been played since then.
‘Roger Waters’ shows some real venom in ‘Pigs’ and ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond, pt.VI-XI’ features some
outstanding jamming which cannot be heard on the original studio recording.
It’s an audience recording but of such good quality that this show has been bootlegged many times. Titles like ‘Oakland Coliseum’, ‘Animal Instincts’, ‘Plays the Animals’ and ‘In The Flesh’ are among the most popular and common boots.
A great recording of a great concert. The band seems to be having a lot of fun (something I assume was rare during the In The Flesh Tour). Roger and Dave laugh hilariously throughout the first verse of “Have a Cigar”. The setlist is a winner, too, including “Eugene” as the final encore. (David) does seem to get a bit annoyed at the crowd when before “Us and Them” he tells the crowd, “This one’s got a quiet beginning.”

The main source for this revision is The Great Gig in Boblingen Ganja 011/2 ROIO minus the filler from the Rainbow Theatre.
Additional material was used from the untitled 1st Gen ROIO of this date to fill in missing intros, gaps and drop outs.
In my opinion Great Gig is better sounding than the other ROIOs available for this date but had some bad edits, bad indexing
and other minor problems.
I did clip restoration to the whole ROIO and balanced the channels a little better.
Also did various declicking and what not. All modifications were done using Cool Edit Pro.

Concert of the conceptual round The Man & The Journey recorded on September 17, 1969 in Amsterdam. For those which do not know this round, the pieces are VERY different from what one has the practice to hear. It is also the time when Pink Floyd made a pause right in the middle of the concert to take the tea! This album is one of best the recording of this round (if it is not the best). The sound is so good that it could be left alone officially!

Smoking Blues
Concert recorded on November 21, 1970 with the Festival of Jazz of Montreux (Swiss), directly from the mixing table! This recording was to leave officially but it was not finally the case. The sound, inevitably, is perfect, the interpretation of quality, in particular Embryo, and one is entitled even to a blues improvised at the end of the concert.

Instruments in the mix are very clear, approaching sb6.It contains material which seldom appears on other roios. Some titles have nice improvisations before they really start. The record is processed with NoNoise, but that can’t repair the bad source tape. Nevertheless it’s the best roio from that early Floyd period (everything is relative). Syd Barret does not appear on the album, although he is on the cover.

This release has literally been “years in the making.”
Over the last two years Marc-Olivier and I have put in
countless hours to bring this release to life.
The original Dawn of the Piper was released many many
years ago in audio format. An official rev A edition
in shorten format was seriously needed.
However, with the release of BBC Archives 1967-1969 many
of the tracks on Dawn of the Piper became redundant. I
made the decision to remove all the redundant tracks and
replace them with new, yet appropriate, material.
Tracks for this release needed to meet three simple requirements:
1) The track must be a Pink Floyd track with Syd Barrett.
No post-Syd Pink Floyd material and no post-Floyd Syd Barrett
material. This is after-all “Dawn” of the Piper.
2) The track must be a pleasant listen. No real rough and
crappy sounding recordings (like the Let’s Roll Another One
rehearsal recording). No commentator in the foreground with
music in the background recordings (like the Matilda’s Mother
track taken from the Granada TV film on the Underground).
3) No material that has ever been officially released on CD.
This last requirement meant deleting the mono Arnold Layne
track from the original Dawn of the Piper track list.
