15. Rasta Get Ready - (previously unreleased)Junior Murvin is a Jamaican reggae artist. He is best known for the classic single “Police and Thieves”, produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry in 1976.
Police and Thieves it was an album by Junior Murvin and backing band called The Upsetters, released in 1977. Along with The Heptones’ Party Time and Max Romeo’s War Ina Babylon, this album can be seen as part of a Black Ark “holy trinity”. This album is perhaps the famous of the three, with good reason: from start to finish it’s a outstanding piece of work, capturing Junior Murvin and the Black Ark at their best. At first, the title track seems to overhsadow the other songs, but numbers like “Rescue Jah Children”, “False Teaching” and the chilling “Lucifer” are just as potent. In 2003, Island re-released this classic album with five great bonus tracks, including some unreleased discomixes. Special mention must be made of “Rasta Get Ready”, an inspired re-working of the Curtis Mayfield classic “People Get Ready”. Essential listening.

20. Ten Commandments Of LoveReview :
This actually has the exact same 20 songs that comprised the previous Epic/Legacy CD release in 1990 that was called The Birth of a Legend, with no “Trenchtown Days” in the title. The differences? None, except that the track sequence is different, and the liner notes are different. And the liner notes are actually inferior to the ones found on 1990s The Birth of a Legend, concentrating on the sociopolitical context of the era in Jamaica, but not giving many details about the music. If you didn’t pick this up first time around (even when these same 20 songs were released on two separate vinyl LPs in the late ’70s), and are just concerned about the music, it’s good. These really should be billed to the Wailers, not Bob Marley solo, but anyway it’s very good ska and early reggae music from 1963-1966, showing their doo wop roots at its quaintest, but also going into full-bore ska on “Simmer Down” and “Dancing Shoes.” The influence of group harmony early American soul is also heard to fine effect on cuts like “One Love,” “I Made a Mistake,” and “It Hurts to Be Alone.”
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh (vocals, guitar); Bunny Wailer, Constantine “Dream” Walker (vocals, percussion); Junior Braithwaite (vocals); Beverly Kelso (background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Ernest Ranglin, Dwight Pinkney (guitar); Lester Sterling, Headley Bennett (alto saxophone); Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook (tenor saxophone); “Ska” Campbell (baritone saxophone); Johnny “Dizzy” Moore (trumpet); Don Drummond (trombone); Richard Ace (keyboards); Lloyd Brevett (bass); Lloyd Knibbs (drums). Producer: Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd. Compilation producer: Jerry Rappaport. Recorded at Studio One, Kingston, Jamaica between 1963 and 1966.

Led by percussionist Bonjo I, African Head Charge formed in the early ’80s and has released seven albums with a shifting lineup that also includes Prisoner, Crocodile, Junior Moses and Sunny Akpan. The band works in the same dub psychedelia territory as Adrian Sherwood’s work, which isn’t surprising since most of African Head Charge’s albums have been released through — and produced by — Sherwood and his On-U Sound label.
After debut album A Hole in the Ground was released in 1981, African Head Charge released Environmental Studies, Drastic Season and Off the Beaten Track (these first four albums have been released as two-fers on two volumes of On-U Sound’s Great Vintage series). African Head Charge soon became On-U Sound’s most popular act, and though they had not played a live date during the first four albums, the group hit the road and began to do live shows. After a break of several years, they returned in 1991 with Songs of Praise and then released In Pursuit of Shashamane Land in 1994 and Akwaaba a year later. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
