it must be said that i’m not a huge fan of platformers. while i appreciate the merits of games such as Tomb Raider, Super Mario Brothers, Prince of Persia (the 2D x86 version) and the like, i never really understood why people enjoyed games consisting solely of different variations on the recurring theme of jumping over gaps, whether they be pools of lava, piranha infested waters, spiked pits, or the bottomless variety. i mean, what is it about randomly discontinuous terrain that is so appealing?
i know, i know. that is a gross oversimplification of the genre, especially in light of the vast repertoire of creative platforming titles existing out there nowadays, but i’ve always considered platforming as one of the duller and more monotonous categories of games.
